All about juju hats
Originally
from Cameroon, juju hat is a traditional ancestral headdress, worn by Bamileke,
Fon and Bamoun ethnic groups. Also called AKA headdress of Cameroon, juju hats
are made of colourful natural feathers sewn on a raffia base. Its great feature
is that it can fold on itself to be stored easily. Each craft is unique and can
be worn by chiefs, high-ranking officers and dancers with elephant masks during
traditional ceremonies like chiefs’ installation, enthronement of successors,
traditional rites, funeral, etc.
For some
years now, these traditional feather headdresses have become an element of deco
across continents. Very popular in England, the United States and Australia,
they arrive in the United Kingdom. Juju Hat is bulky but still airy and will
give a bohemian touch to the trendiest interiors of the moment. Made with
natural dye feathers, it can be attached like a painting in the bedroom, the
living room and even in the dining room.
Their use
as an object of decoration led to the creation of new models with various colours.
The juju hats are nonetheless a local handicraft product, exclusively made in
the region of West Cameroon. Their preparation, manual, is long and tedious.
So, it is important to ensure that production is carried out by artisans who
have a real know-how. Many speciality shops offer different type of juju hats.
You can find them on the internet in sites like MUKALA AFRICA.
